Meet John! John's journey with Jitjatjo has empowered him to explore new opportunities, meet new people, and grow professionally, all while maintaining control over his schedule. His favorite part? The ability to plan his life around his work - something that traditional hospitality roles don't often allow.

Name: John O.

Joined Flex: December 2022

Profession: Catering, Concessions, Events

What first interested you about working with Jitjatjo?

I found myself between jobs and was considering exploring a different career path, but knew very little of gig work outside of the catering jobs I was accustomed to. Initially, I had been using a similar career platform to find work. While I was on-site at a job, a fellow professional introduced me to Jitjatjo, of which he spoke very highly, and that caught my attention. He sent me a link to download the Flex app. I was really intrigued by the ease and selection of choosing work that suited my needs.

What has been your favorite gig you have worked so far, and why?

My favorite gig has been working at the Steinberg Conference Center. The management team there is superb! They are very helpful and supportive, and overall I’ve had a really pleasant experience working there.

What is the best part about making your own schedule?

The ability to make plans, knowing that you'll actually be able to commit to them. The field of work I am in typically does not allow for nights or weekends off - most of the time, it just isn’t an option. Jitjatjo’s Flex app gives you back some control and freedom in your life. In my case, I was thrilled to discover that there were available morning shifts, which meant I could have some evenings and weekends to myself if I chose.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

Working in the hospitality industry, my typical work day varies depending on the job I take. I have done everything from setting up a dry bar for an event to working a concession stand.

What scared you the most when you took your first gig?

Directions and actually finding the job site - that's always the scariest part! The rest is usually a breeze.

If you could give new employees one piece of advice, what would it be?

Be flexible, be open-minded, and be patient.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

On a job, I was given a timeline and the BEO for an event. The event planner wanted to take more of a host role, and mingle with the client and their guests. I performed my job so well that I was invited back repeatedly. People recognize good work when they see it, and will ask you to return!

With a flexible schedule, how do you like to spend your time when you're not working?

Very leisurely! I like to cook and entertain for friends. I've always enjoyed putting out a good meal and watching people eat and enjoy themselves.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Being a true Pisces, I've always been in touch with what's coming in the future, so I would definitely be a Soothsayer.

What’s the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?

While traveling in Mexico, I was introduced to fried crickets along with some other snacks I had never had before. Trife was by far the weirdest, and no, I would never eat it again!

Anything else you’d like to share?

At 45 years old, I am still learning so much about myself. Jitjatjo has definitely been a great resource for me. While I wanted to explore different career paths, I did not have the leisure to be unemployed. The Flex app provided a means for me to generate income while not being stressed out looking for a job. Also, in the event a job is not right for you, you can continue to work while exploring other opportunities. It really has benefited my life in many ways, like having the opportunity to meet new people and work at different locations. I recommend that anyone give it a try!
